Microbial Contamination Control

Fuel tanks and other storage systems are common environments for thriving aerobic and anaerobic bacteria given the right set of conditions.

When left untreated it can lead to the development of corrosive biomass in the fuel which can clog the filters and strainers in the tank. It can also cause tank corrosion and fuel spoiling.

Inside a storage tank fungi use the product/water interface as a source of food to grow and spread throughout the system. The most common forms of contamination can be found in diesel and kerosene storage tanks but resilient strains have also been known to even contaminate leaded gasoline tanks.

The condensation of water vapor within the storage tanks, in conjunction with the water that has naturally dissolved into the product, provides a breeding ground for harmful microbial growth within the system. Any free water/fuel interface at the bottom of the tank will provide a perfect incubator for unchecked contamination.

By drawing samples (ASTM D7464) from critical locations within and around the fuel storage system we can then analyse these samples for evidence of microbes and microbial activity. Due to the sensitive nature of this issue, proper training and experience are essential when obtaining samples and conducting testing.

Based on our analysis we can then help you in determining the most effective products, dosages, and treatment intervals to provide you with optimal microbial contamination control.
